The Fiesta de San Juan at Hispania, escuela de español

Do you like bonfires, fireworks and fun? Then you can't miss out on the Fiesta de San Juan in Valencia, one of the most popular and spectacular celebrations in the city. Each year on the 23rd of June, thousands of people gather on the beaches and squares in Valencia, in order to welcome the summer with music, dancing and lots of happiness. The shortest night of the year turns into the most magical and special one.

The Fiesta de San Juan has its origins in an ancient pagan tradition that consisted of lighting bonfires to pay homage to the sun and purify the soul. Over time, the festival became Christianised and associated with the birth of Saint John the Baptist on 24th of June. However, the festive and symbolic spirit of the night is still alive and blends in with the local customs.

In Valencia, the Fiesta de San Juan is mainly celebrated on the beaches, where stages are set up with live music and paella and sandcastle competitions are organised. As night falls, bonfires are lit and fireworks are launched from the sea, creating a spectacle of light and colour that lights up the sky. Many people take the opportunity to jump over the bonfires or swim in the sea, following traditions that say doing these things brings good luck and good health.

The most popular beaches on this night are the Malvarrosa and Las Arenas beaches. People enjoy the shortest night of the year and don´t miss the opportunity to swim in the sea and have fun with their friends.

At Hispania, escuela de español, we also make this festival an unforgettable day! During the classes, our students discover the history of this magical night from their wonderful teachers and prepare themselves to enjoy the Fiesta of San Juan, point by point, like a real Spaniard.

In addition, every year we organise an activity in which students can discover this tradition first hand. Our students light the bonfire of San Juan, jump the waves and above all, have a great time with their classmates and teachers.

The Fiesta de San Juan is a unique experience not to be missed if you want to enjoy the liveliest and most festive atmosphere in the city. It is an opportunity to get to know the Valencian culture, make new friends and have an unforgettable night. What are you waiting for? Book your trip and come and experience it for yourself!

At Hispania, escuela de español, we would be delighted to help you continue adding to your unique experiences. We look forward to seeing you!
